Roll With It! Understanding the Benefits of Field Roll Forming a Standing Seam Panel

The ability to field roll form metal panels for a standing seam roof can be a valuable asset to reduce the overall cost of the project, as well as provide a more aesthetically pleasing roof system.  A panel end lap, which is a condition that occurs when two shorter panel are joined together with fastener and adhesives, creates a condition on the roof that will be susceptible to water leaks throughout the life of the roof.  They almost always require continual maintenance, which can become very costly over time.  By field roll forming continuous length panels, you will also have the ability to eliminate panel end laps on the roof.

It is important to know when the benefits of field roll forming can be applied to your project in a cost effective manner.  Below is a list of facts to help you determine if field roll forming is a suitable option on your next Garland Standing Seam Roof Project:

I.          Shipping

  • Logistics

    • The maximum length of a preformed panel that you can have shipped to the job site is 82-86 feet.
    • A full size, long haul tractor trailer is required to ship the field roll former.
    • Also consider trucks to transport the panels and an additional truck for accessories, such as the clips and seam caps.
    • Freight for a spreader bar must also be taken into consideration.    However, the spreader bar may be able to be shipped on the same truck as the system's accessories.
  • Costs

    • Shipping a preformed metal panel over 52 feet in length will approximately double the freight cost for a stretched load.
    • Be sure to always get freight quote estimates for the field roll former.  Permits for each state, allowable travel times and travel costs will vary depending on the route and distance traveled.
    • The cost of field roll forming metal panels is included in the panel's price per square foot.  Each project's cost to field roll form will be different.

II.         Roll Forming Equipment

  • Field Roll Former (Capabilities and Limitations)

    • Garland has the ability to field roll form panels up to 200 feet in length, and can roll form at a rate of about 100 feet per minute.
    • Field roll forming can only be performed for projects with buildings that are one or two stories in height. 
    • A minimum of 14 roll forming stations is required during the roll forming process for Garland projects.
    • Site limitations must also be taken into account.  You will need a relatively flat area with significant payout.  Take into consideration that the amount of space needed includes 50 feet for the trailer, plus the length of the panel, plus storage of the panels.  Do not underestimate the space required. 

 

  • Spreader Bar
  • Spreader bars used to lift the panels are available for up to 185 feet lengths.
  • The spreader bars are only to be used to lift smaller bundles of panels, usually 4-6 panels at a time.
  • The spreader bars consist of 6 pieces, each of which is 20 feet in length. 

 

  • Lifting Equipment

    • A fork lift or lull with a minimum lifting capacity of 10,000 lbs is required to load and unload the roll former and coils.
    • A crane capable of handling 35lbs per linear foot of spreader bar plus the weight of the panels is also required.
